Josh Allen is more prolific than you might realize. He’s piled up more fantasy points in the last three years than anybody in league history. He’s a runner and a passer, and that’s a tough combo to beat.
Simply as a passer, Allen is a top-level guy. He’s averaged 270 passing yards in his last 49 games, with 108 touchdowns – just over 2 per week. But he’s also a big-time runner. Over the last three years, he’s run for 1,946 yards and 22 TDs. And when you put the running and passing stats together, it lifts Allen above the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning and all the rest.
See the chart below. It shows all quarterbacks who’ve been involved in at least 100 touchdowns in a three-year period. I’ve listed cumulative stats for those 43 players. The final column shows the per-game potency, using standard fantasy scoring. And Allen grades out almost a point higher than everyone else.
I am surprised some of the guys from earlier eras don’t show up higher. Dan Marino (with seasons of 48 and 44 touchdown passes) finishes only 20th, showing the value of rushing production. Steve Young and Brett Favre from the ‘90s are near the bottom. And neither Tom Brady nor Peyton Manning show up in the top 9.
Drew Brees and Tom Brady are the only two quarterbacks who’ve had eight different three-year periods where they put up 100-plus touchdowns (with a bunch of the seasons, of course, overlapping in different three-year chunks). Aaron Rodgers has seven, including three in a row after the top 4.
On the downside with Allen, I think we’ve seen his best ball. The three years coming up won’t be as good as the last three. I think this is the year they’re finally going to have some success with dialing him back as a runner. I am not sure at this point if he’ll be the top quarterback on my board. Maybe. I got burned by not ranking him No. 1 last year. But I’m still looking at things.
