Twins trade Jorge Polanco to Mariners

The Seattle Mariners welcome second baseman Jorge Polanco after finalizing a trade with the Minnesota Twins. In return, Minnesota will receive relief pitcher Justin Topa, starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani, minor league Darren Bowen, and prospect Gabriel Gonzalez.

The deal was finalized Monday night and the Mariners are also giving the Twins up to $8 million in cash considerations to land Polanco. The switch hitter from the Dominican Republic has a career. 269 batting average, putting him above the league’s average.

Last season, he batted .255/.335/.454/.789, collecting 77 hits, 48 runs batted in, and 14 home runs in 302 at-bats. Polanco made the American League All-Star team in 2019 after hitting a career-high .295 courtesy of a career-high 186 hits on 631 at-bats. He also received votes for the AL Most Valuable Player award that year, finishing 13th.

Polanco played his first ten Major League Baseball seasons with the Twins. However, he appeared in only nine games combined in 2014 and 2015. He will move to Seattle on a $10.5 million salary after the Twins exercise his option this winter. His contract comes with a $12 million club option for 2025.

Adding Jorge Polanco gives the Mariners more batters that can help generate offense. He will join projected batting order with J.P. Crawford, Ty France, Cal Raleigh, and Julio Rodriguez. Seattle also added Mitch Haniger and Mitch Garver this offseason for more firepower.

Conversely, Minnesota agreed to the trade as a cost-cutting measure because financial liabilities for Topa and DeSclafani are only $5.25 million.

Polanco has 849 hits, 447 RBIs, and 112 home runs in ten season with Minnesota.
