Jorge Soler agrees to three-year contract with Giants

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle first reported that outfielder/designated hitter Jorge Soler agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. Soler played the previous two seasons with the Miami Marlins under an agreement with player opt-outs.

While he declined the option after 2022, he exercised his opt-out after the 2023 season. Soler’s new contract gives him $14 million annually, $1 million higher than he would have received if he stayed with the Marlins.

Soler earned his first All-Star selection last season after finishing with 36 home runs and 75 RBIs in 504 at-bats. Before playing for the Marlins, he suited up for the Atlanta Braves and became the Most Valuable Player of the 2021 World Series after hitting three home runs in six games. He became the second Cuban-born player after Livan Hernandez to win that individual honor.

He joined the Braves via a July 2021 trade from the Kansas City Royals. In return, the Royals received Kasey Kalich. Soler made his Major League Baseball debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2014. In December 2016, the Cubs traded him to the Royals for Wade Davis.

Soler has a .243 career batting average and .330 on-base percentage. He has 736 hits, 452 RBIs, and 170 home runs in 3,473 plate appearances.
