Xander Bogaerts moves to 2B as Ha-Seong Kim takes over at SS

San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt is making some roster changes for the 2024 Major League Baseball season. He will move infielder Xander Bogaerts to second base while Ha-Seong Kim moves to shortstop.

In his first season with the Padres, Bogaerts batted .285 with 170 hits, 58 runs batted in, and 19 home runs in 596 at-bats. The 2024 MLB season is the second of his 11-year, $280 million deal with San Diego.

Before joining the Padres, Bogaerts was a three-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger with the Boston Red Sox. He received votes for the American League Most Valuable Player award, finishing as high as fifth place in 2019. That year, Bogaerts batted .309 with 190 hits, 117 RBIs, and 33 home runs.

Meanwhile, Ha-Seong Kim is a three-time Korean Baseball Organization Golden Glove Awardee before joining the Padres in 2021. He earned his first MLB Gold Glove in 2023 after finishing with a .991 fielding percentage at second base and .986 at third base and shortstop. That distinction made him the first Korean player to win an MLB Gold Glove.

Kim also received votes for the 2023 National League Most Valuable Player award after hitting .260 with 140 hits, 60 RBIs, and 17 home runs. The 2024 season will be the final year under the four-year, $28 million deal he signed in December 2020.
