While Jimmy Garoppolo’s situation for the 2024 NFL season remains uncertain, he will face a two-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing Drugs. According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Garoppolo used medication without a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption.

His suspension will take effect once the 2024 season starts, regardless of where he might play. During the 2023 offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders signed Garoppolo to a three-year deal worth up to $72 million. However, a section of his contract deemed the deal void if he didn’t recover from his foot injury.

But while Garoppolo reunited with Josh McDaniels, Aidan O’Connell took over as starting quarterback after six games. During that stretch, Garoppolo had 110 completions for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

As the Raiders transition from McDaniels to Antonio Pierce, Garoppolo could be out of the roster before the fifth day of the 2024 league year. That move will clear $27 million in cap space, including his $11.25 million base salary.

Garoppolo started his career with the New England Patriots as a second-round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. He played primarily as Tom Brady’s backup and won Super Bowls 49 and 51.

In October 2017, the Patriots traded him to the San Francisco 49ers for a second-round pick in the 2018 draft. Two seasons later, he helped the team reach Super Bowl 54 but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Injuries have been a constant challenge for Jimmy Garoppolo throughout his career. He suffered a season-ending ACL tear in 2018, two years before he experienced another season-ending ankle sprain. In 2022, his Week 13 foot injury allowed Brock Purdy to play behind center for the Niners.

Purdy’s exceptional play made him the starter during the 2022 playoffs and the 2023 season. Conversely, Garoppolo signed with the Raiders after the 49ers allowed him to explore free agency.
