Eric Hosmer retires from Major League Baseball

First baseman Eric Hosmer has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball. He played 13 seasons for four teams and earned an All-Star selection in 2016. He shared his retirement via an Instagram video and revealed the launching of MoonBall Media and the Diggin’ Deep Podcast.

Hosmer appeared in 31 games for the Chicago Cubs last season. He batted .234 with 14 runs batted in, two home runs, and 22 hits. Before suiting up for the Cubs, Hosmer played one season for the Boston Red Sox. The San Diego Padres sent Hosmer, Corey Rosier, and Max Ferguson to the Red Sox for Jay Groome.

The Florida native played for the Padres from 2018 to 2022. He accumulated 69 home runs and 309 RBIs. However, after getting traded to Boston, he did not finish the eight-year, $144 million contract he signed with the Padres.

Eric Hosmer made his mark in baseball when he played for the Kansas City Royals. The team drafted him in 2008 and elevated him to the Major League roster in 2011. Hosmer earned four Gold Glove Awards and a Silver Slugger Award in seven seasons with the Royals. He was also vital to the World Series-winning Royals roster in 2015.

Hosmer is a career .276 hitter with 893 RBIs, 1,753 hits, and 198 home runs. He had 6,349 at-bats and 6,977 plate appearances in 1,689 games.
