The Houston Texans tried out tight end Dalton Schultz on a one-year, $6.25 million deal. That includes a $1.5 million base salary and a $4.5 million signing bonus. But after that season, the former Stanford standout is walking away with a three-year extension worth up to $36 million.

Both sides agreed to extend their partnership after seeing Schultz develop chemistry with 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud. Despite starting only eight of his 15 games, Dalton Schultz finished with 59 receptions for 635 yards and five touchdowns. Out of his total receptions, 35 were for first downs.

His new deal is the 11th most lucrative contract among tight ends in terms of annual average value. It also includes $23.5 million guaranteed at signing.

Schultz played his first five NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. The NFC East squad selected him in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft and played out his four-year, $2.91 million rookie-scale deal until 2021.

In 2022, he played under the franchise tag worth $10.931 million. However, his PCL injury diminished his playing time, giving Peyton Hendershot and Jake Ferguson more playing time. A year later, he established himself as the Texans’ starting tight end.

Aside from Schultz, the Texans must decide whether to bring back other talented offensive players like Noah Brown, Devin Singletary, Michael Deiter, and Scott Quessenberry.
