Steelers Decline Najee Harris' Fifth-Year Option

The Pittsburgh Steelers declined running back Najee Harris's fifth-year option, which would have paid him $6.79 million in 2024. Instead, he will become a free agent after the season, diminishing his chances of wearing the Steelers uniform again.

Before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, Najee Harris had already established himself as a formidable force in college football. He was a two-time National Champion and a Doak Walker Award winner for the Alabama Crimson Tide. This impressive track record and his selection as the 24th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft sets high expectations for his performance in the NFL.

Harris compiled three 1,000-yard seasons with the Steelers. He became a Pro Bowler in his rookie year after compiling 1,200 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. A year later, he had 1,034 yards and seven touchdowns. Last season, the California native had 1,035 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s the only running back to have 1,000-yard seasons from 2021 to 2023.

Najee Harris will remain the Steelers' starting running back in 2024. He will receive support from Jaylen Warren, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Aaron Shampklin.

Meanwhile, the Steelers have improved the offensive line, creating gaps for Harris and the running back crew to exploit. They chose offensive tackle Troy Fautanu in the first round, center Zach Frazier in the second round, and guard Mason McCormick in the fourth round of the 2024 draft.
