Christian McCaffrey Signs Two-Year Contract Extension

While Christian McCaffrey is already the highest-paid NFL running back, the San Francisco 49ers secured his future with a two-year, $38 million contract extension. The deal will keep him with the Niners until 2027, when he turns 31, and has a potential out after the 2025 season.

The three-time Pro Bowler’s new contract increases the running back market’s ceiling to $19 million, making him one of five running backs with an average salary of at least $10 million. McCaffrey also leads his position in total cash for 2024 ($16 million), two-year cash ($32.2 million), and three-year cash ($44,700,000).

The former Stanford standout deserves the lucrative contract after a dominant 2023 season. In addition to leading the league in rushing yards (1,459), he added 564 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns. His 14 rushing touchdowns are a single-season franchise record. His output earned him a Pro Bowl selection, a First Team All-Pro nod, and Offensive Player of the Year honors.

During the 2020 offseason, McCaffrey signed a four-year, $64 million contract with the Carolina Panthers. Two years later, the team that selected him eighth overall in the 2017 NFL draft traded him to the 49ers. The Panthers received San Francisco’s second, third, and fourth-round picks in the 2023 draft and a 2024 fifth-rounder.

In 2019, McCaffrey became the third running back in NFL history to have 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards. Five years later, he was exceptional in his first Super Bowl appearance, tallying 30 touches for 160 yards and a touchdown.
