Buccaneers Sign WR Sterling Shepard

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard will continue his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After signing a one-year deal to join the reigning NFC South champions, he will be reunited with his Oklahoma teammate, quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Shepard experienced tough times throughout his career. In 2021, a torn Achilles limited him to seven games. He finished with 366 yards and a touchdown. A year later, a torn ACL ended his campaign at three games.

While he played 15 games last season, he only had ten receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. Shepard’s best NFL season came in 2018 when he had 66 receptions for 872 yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile, he established a career-high eight touchdowns during his rookie season.

The Buccaneers will be Shepard’s second NFL team. He spent the first eight seasons with the New York Giants, who selected him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. In his ninth season, he will join a receiver room featuring Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Shepard revealed to sports journalist Josina Anderson that Mayfield texted him before the signing with the Buccaneers. The former Heisman Trophy winner asked, “Man, you think you got one more in you?” Considering his family situation, Shepard responded that he was ready for the right opportunity.

But as he signs with the two-time Super Bowl champions, the Oklahoma native gets to add to his 4,095 career receiving yards and 23 touchdowns.
