Joe Alt Signs Rookie-Scale Contract with Chargers

As ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter shared, the Los Angeles Chargers and offensive tackle Joe Alt have agreed to a four-year, $33.2 million rookie contract. The deal is fully guaranteed, and the Chargers will have a fifth-year option after selecting Alt in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.

According to Spotrac, the contract includes a $20.9 million signing bonus, which will be prorated for salary cap purposes. The first offensive lineman selected in the 2024 draft will earn base salaries of $795,000 this year and $960,000 in 2025. That value will increase to $1,075,000 in 2026 and $1,190,000 in 2027.

Alt will also receive the following roster bonuses: $1,342,316 (2025), $2,734,362 (2026), and $4,126,948 (2027). As for salary cap hits, the former Notre Dame standout will count for the corresponding amounts: $6,029,262 (2024), $7,536,578 (2025), $9,043,894 (2026), and $10,551,210 (2027).

Joe Alt was a 2023 Unanimous All-American before the Chargers took him off the board. Pro Football Focus gave him a 90.7 grade in 2023, which is still impressive but slightly lower than the 91.4 he got in 2022. Quarterback Justin Herbert will have an easier time in the pocket if Alt can translate his 91.2 pass-blocking grade from last year.

He will compete for a roster spot in the Chargers offensive line under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.
