Linebacker Shaquille Leonard hasn’t been the same dominating force after a back injury that limited him to three games during the 2022 NFL season. The Indianapolis Colts waived him after nine games a year later, even if he complained that the team didn’t play him enough while healthy.
However, while he played 14 games for the Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles last season, Leonard finished with disappointing numbers (88 tackles, one sack). Those numbers could be the reason he remains a free agent late into the 2024 offseason. However, he has no problems accepting that he might not earn a contract this year.
Regarding his situation, Leonard shared with the Indianapolis Star's Kyle Smedley:
"I'm moreso just sitting back, getting the body healthy, and whenever the opportunity presents itself, we'll give it a try. I just continue to be me by working hard. If it happens, it happens. If it don't, it don't. I think I've had a great career throughout my career, even if I do step away from it. ... I'm enjoying life and just waiting on that opportunity."

At the peak of his career, Leonard is a four-time All-Pro (three First-Team) member and a three-time Pro Bowler. He won the 2018 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award after leading the league in solo (111) and combined (163) tackles. Leonard also led the league with eight forced fumbles in 2021.
At 28, Leonard should have much football left in him. Therefore, he should get at least a training camp invite to prove he can still play at a high level.
