As training camps for the 2024 NFL season commence, former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore remains without a team. His situation is surprising because he played magnificently for the Dallas Cowboys, tallying 68 tackles and 13 passes defended in 17 games.
Speaking with NFL insider Josina Anderson, Gilmore voiced his frustration about remaining a free agent while teams gear up for the upcoming season. The two-time All-Pro cornerback said:
“You mean to tell me that there are 64 starting corners that are better than me? I don’t think that.”
In addition to his All-Pro nods, Stephon Gilmore is a five-time Pro Bowler and one-time interceptions leader. His production for the Cowboys last season makes him worthy of another lease on his NFL life. Dallas could bring him back, but they have a solid cornerback tandem in Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland.
For reference, Gilmore completed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Cowboys. Therefore, the $10 million annual salary is a fair rate for a player of his stature.

"There are still some good corners and safeties out there like Justin Simmons and myself that are still not signed. Honestly, I’m still being patient and staying ready until teams see what they have… pic.twitter.com/JeVCrlLICv
Gilmore also mentioned fellow All-Pro defensive back Justin Simmons, who remains unsigned after the Denver Broncos released him to clear up cap space for Russell Wilson’s massive cap hit.
