Vikings Sign J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Hunter to Rookie-Scale Contracts

It took a while before the Minnesota Vikings signed their first-round picks, J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner. They’ve finally come to terms with their rookie-scale deals with a fifth-year option for the 2028 NFL season.

The Vikings gave the tenth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft a four-year, $21.8 million fully guaranteed contract, with a $12.7 million signing bonus. McCarthy will earn the following base salaries throughout the deal: $795,000 (2024), $960,000 (2025), $1,075,000 (2026), and $1,190,000 (2027).

He will also get the following roster bonuses: $828,400 (2025), $1.7 million (2026), and $2.5 million (2027). Meanwhile, his cap hit will range from $3.9 million in 2024 to $6.9 million in 2027.

While the Vikings envision McCarthy as their future franchise quarterback, it’s uncertain if he will get a start this season. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has Sam Darnold as his starting quarterback and will only switch to McCarthy when he deems the former Michigan standout ready.

Conversely, the Vikings signed Turner to a four-year, $15.7 million contract, which includes an $8.2 million prorated signing bonus. His base salaries range from $795,000 to $2.9 million. Meanwhile, his cap hit could go from $2.8 million to $5 million.

Before joining the Vikings, Turner was a 2023 Consensus All-American after tallying 53 tackles, 10 sacks, and two forced fumbles for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
