Falcons Sign Justin Simmons To One-Year Contract

It’s a mystery that Justin Simmons, a four-time Second-Team All-Pro safety, lasted this long before signing a contract. However, the wait is over after the Atlanta Falcons signed him to a one-year, $8 million deal.

The Denver Broncos released Simmons during the 2024 offseason as part of salary cap-clearing measures for the $85 million dead money of Russell Wilson's five-year, $242 million contract. The release also allowed him to sign with a team in a better position to enter the playoffs or compete in the Super Bowl.

Hence, Simmons potentially went with the Falcons because of their masterful offseason moves. On defense, the Falcons added Jessie Bates and traded for Matthew Judon. Those additions will help Grady Jarrett and AJ Terrell in shutting down opponents.

Simmons finished the 2023 season with 70 tackles, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles in 15 games. The year before, he led the league in interceptions (6) despite playing only 12 games due to a quad injury. The defensive back from Boston College also earned Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2023.

In addition to Atlanta's defense moves, they bolstered their offense by signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract. Meanwhile, the Falcons made a surprise move by selecting Michael Penix Jr. in the 2024 NFL Draft.
