Falcons Trade QB Taylor Heinicke To Chargers

With the Atlanta Falcons going with Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr. as their quarterbacks this season, they’ve traded Taylor Heinicke to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick. The Athletic’s Senior NFL insider, Dianna Russini, broke the news.

Heinicke arrived in Atlanta after signing a two-year, $14 million contract last season. Unfortunately, his stint with the Falcons will end after one season as he now becomes Justin Herbert’s backup. In five games last year, he had 74 passing attempts for 890 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions.

The quarterback from Old Dominion started his career as an undrafted rookie with the Minnesota Vikings. Since then, he has played for the Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, and the Washington Football Team/Commanders.

With the Commanders, he made a name for himself by tallying 321 passing attempts for 6,635 yards and 39 touchdowns in 2021. He also has 588 rushing yards and three touchdowns throughout his career.

The Chargers underwent some minor changes at quarterback after releasing Max Duggan. Bringing in Heinicke gives the Chargers an able quarterback who can take over if Herbert gets injured.
