CB Michael Carter II Agrees To Three-Year Contract Extension With Jets

Nickel cornerback Michael Carter II and the New York Jets agreed to a three-year, $30.75 million contract extension, which includes $19 million in guaranteed money. As ESPN Staff Writer Rich Cimini pointed out, Carter is the first selection by Jets general manager Joe Douglas to earn an extension.

Carter’s extension comes at a perfect time because he was in the final season of his four-year, $3.8 million rookie scale contract. He doesn’t have a fifth-year option because the Jets selected him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

During his rookie season, the former Duke standout had 45 solo tackles, five passes defended, and two fumble recoveries in 15 games. He followed it up with 50 solo tackles and nine pass deflections during his second season in New York.

Last year, Carter tallied 37 solo tackles and nine passes defended in 15 games. Carter’s signing solidifies the Jets defensive secondary, featuring him, D.J. Reed, and Sauce Gardner. Their cornerback crew helps New York’s AFC team become one of the NFL’s elite defensive units.

However, Carter and the Jets will be tested during their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Kyle Shanahan’s squad has a stacked offense featuring Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Brock Purdy.
