After much delay and drama, the San Francisco 49ers and offensive tackle Trent Williams agree to a three-year, $82.66 million restructured contract with $48 million in guaranteed money. It’s an essential signing because the Niners are thin on the offensive line, especially at left tackle.
Williams stayed away from the squad until he received his request for guaranteed money. Before the restructured deal, his contract had no guaranteed money, even though he had some years left in his original six-year, $138.06 million deal.
Williams’ contract extension comes after the Niners agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract extension with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. With Williams and Aiyuk secured, San Francisco remains among the favorites for the NFC Championship and the Super Bowl LIX title. More importantly, the four-time All-Pro and 11-time Pro Bowler will protect Brock Purdy’s blind side.
However, Trent Williams’ new deal adds to the hefty compensation the 49ers must pay their stars. In addition to his ($27.5 million) and Aiyuk’s ($30 million) annual average, they also have defensive end Nick Bosa, who averages $34 million annually.

San Francisco must also compensate for the annual average salaries of Deebo Samuel ($23.85 million), Javon Hargrave ($21 million), Fred Warner ($19.045 million), Christian McCaffrey ($19 million), and George Kittle ($15 million). However, it’s a necessary price to pay for being competitive in the long run.
