Chiefs Place Harrison Butker On Injured Reserve

The Kansas City Chiefs transferred placekicker Harrison Butker to injured reserve after suffering a knee injury during their Week 10 game against the Denver Broncos. Being on IR means he will miss at least four games this season.

As 92.9 The Game’s Drew Butler shared, the injury might have been caused by a change in his kicking technique, wherein he dropped on his left knee, injuring his meniscus. Butker’s injury will require surgery, meaning he might not return immediately after the minimum four-week absence.

Through nine games this season, Butker has converted 18 field goals out of 20 attempts and 21 of 22 extra points. Meanwhile, his 49 kickoffs generated 3,143 yards and 39 touchbacks.

While the Carolina Panthers selected Butker in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Chiefs signed him off the Panthers’ practice squad early that season. No one has come close to his role as Kansas City’s placekicker since. Butker established a career-high 38 field goal conversions during his rookie season. In 2022, he converted a career-best 62-yard field goal attempt.

With Butker sidelined, the Chiefs signed Spencer Shrader from the New York Jets practice squad. Shrader is an undrafted free agent who played for the Indianapolis Colts and the Jets before signing with the Chiefs. He converted three extra points in the one game he played for Indianapolis.
