It was reported that David Montgomery, a running back for the Detroit Lions, might need season-ending surgery for his injured knee. However, NFL Network national insider Ian Rapoport reported that Montgomery avoided surgery and will undergo rehabilitation instead.
This decision means that Montgomery can still return this season. The Lions will welcome his return, considering the numerous injuries they’re dealing with, especially on defense. Having Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs power the backfield helps the Lions generate more points to relieve some pressure off their defense.

The running back from Iowa State revealed he’s targeting a return during the Lions’ playoff opener. Detroit has secured their playoff berth regardless of what happens during their last three regular season games.
Before the injury he suffered during their Week 15 game against the Buffalo Bills, Montgomery had 185 carries for 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. His rushing yards total is significant because some sportsbooks placed his over-under for the season at 775.5 yards.
However, while Montgomery and the Lions are through to the playoffs, their seeding remains unknown because the Minnesota Vikings can overtake them for the NFC North lead and the conference’s top seed.
