Chiefs Lock AFC's Top Seed With a Victory Over the Steelers

The two-time defending Super Bowl champions received an excellent gift on Christmas Day. The Kansas City Chiefs will have a Wild Card Round bye and a Divisional Round home game after securing the top seed in the American Football Conference playoffs. During their Dec. 25 game, they clinched the number one spot by dominating the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-10.

In addition to extending their winning streak to six games, it’s only their third victory by more than one possession. They defeated the San Francisco 49ers (28-18) in Week 7 and the Cleveland Browns (21-7 in Week 15. Meanwhile, scoring 29 points means the Chiefs reached the 30-point mark only twice throughout the season.

Kansas City’s defense was commendable in neutralizing the Steelers' offense. They generated five sacks, two of which came from Mike Danna, and nine quarterback hits. Justin Reid also picked off Wilson in the end zone for a touchback.

Mahomes had an excellent game, finishing with 29 completions out of 38 attempts for 320 yards and three touchdowns. While the Steelers were more effective on third down, the Chiefs generated 320 passing yards for an average of 8.4 yards per completion.

With nothing left to play for, the Chiefs could rest their starters in their season finale against the Denver Broncos. In doing so, Mahomes and his fellow starters could have two weeks of rest before seeing action in the Divisional Round against the Wild Card Round winner with the lowest seed. Winning that game gives them another home game for the AFC Championship.
