The Dolphins will play without Tua Tagovailoa. That greatly reduces my interest in DeVon Achane. He’s not the same back when the offense is directed by backup quarterbacks.
Achane has scored 11 touchdowns in the 11 games Tua has started. He hasn’t scored any touchdowns in the five games started by Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley.
Achane hasn’t been a dominant runner even with Tua in the lineup, averaging 56 yards, but he’s averaged 23 fewer yards with the backups, at almost a yard less per carry.
It’s in the passing game where Achane really turns into a pumpkin. With Tua, he’s been the best pass-catching back in the league, averaging 6.1 catches for 48 yards, with 6 TDs in 11 games.
With the backup quarterbacks, the timing on those pass plays doesn’t tend to sync up properly, and Tyler Huntley tends to operate as his own checkdown, frequently scrambling. The result has been shockingly ordinary numbers (2.2 catches for 12 yards, with no touchdowns).
Unlikely, it seems, that Achane will be putting up big numbers against the Jets.
