Texans Release WR Diontae Johnson

The Houston Texans parted ways with wide receiver Diontae Johnson before their Divisional Round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Texans claimed Johnson off waivers on December 23 and waived him three weeks later.

While the Texans won their Wild Card Round game against the Los Angeles Chargers, multiple reports revealed that Johnson was upset after the victory because of having limited playing time and targets. Teammates tried calming him down, preventing him from raining on their parade.

Johnson finished his only game for the Texans with two receptions for 12 yards. That’s a disappointing ending to his 2024 season, where he spent time with three teams. He started the year with the Carolina Panthers after the Pittsburgh Steelers traded him. In return, the Steelers received cornerback Donte Jackson and a sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft.

However, while he led the team in receiving yards, the Panthers traded Johnson to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2025 fifth-round selection. While he played four games for Baltimore, he caught only one pass for six yards. Worst yet, the Ravens bestowed a one-game suspension for refusing to enter the Week 13 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Johnson had a promising start to his career with the Steelers. He became a Second-Team All-Pro punt returner and finished with 680 receiving yards in his rookie season (2019). Two years later (2021), he had career highs in receiving yards (1,161) and touchdown catches (8).
