Dan Quinn Makes History In His Playoff Victory with Commanders

Dan Quinn has done a terrific job in turning around the Washington Commanders. From a 4-13 record last season under Ron Rivera, the Commanders finished the 2024 regular season with a 12-5 record.

While their standing wasn’t enough to win the division, they still clinched a playoff berth as the NFC’s sixth seed. More importantly, their journey isn’t over as Quinn and the Commanders defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thanks to Zane Gonzalez’s winning doink field goal.

That victory made Quinn the first Washington coach since 1943 to win a playoff game in his first season. That year, Dutch Bergman led the then-Washington Redskins to a 28-0 Divisional Playoff win against the New York Giants.

Meanwhile, the Commanders’ Wild Card Round victory over the Buccaneers is the franchise’s first playoff victory since 2005. Coincidentally, Washington defeated Tampa Bay in that Wild Card Round game 17-10. The win sets up the Commanders with a Divisional Round showdown against the top-seed Detroit Lions.

Quinn isn’t new to transforming franchises. The Atlanta Falcons hired him as head coach in February 2015, replacing Mike Smith. He guided the team to a stint in Super Bowl LI, which they lost to the New England Patriots despite having a 28-3 third-quarter lead. Quinn had two winning seasons, two playoff berths, and three postseason victories with the Falcons.
