Bears Interview Former Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy

While eight teams are still in the running for Super Bowl LIX, some eliminated teams have started the search for their next head coach. The Chicago Bears are one of those teams after firing Matt Eberflus early in the season. While the Bears also interviewed interim head coach Thomas Brown, they did not waste time in inviting former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.

The Bears announced through their official X/Twitter account that they’ve completed an interview with McCarthy. This session came after McCarthy and Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones failed to agree on some contract extension terms.

In addition to McCarthy’s Super Bowl victory with the Green Bay Packers, he has also led the Packers to six division titles and four NFC Championship Games. With Dallas, he completed three consecutive seasons with at least 12 victories.

While those seasons translated to playoff berths, the Cowboys were eliminated in the Wild Card Round twice despite enjoying home-field advantage. McCarthy has a 185-123-2 head coaching record (including playoffs) in 18 NFL seasons.

Speaking of the Cowboys, they plan to interview Robert Saleh for the position McCarthy vacated. The New York Jets fired Saleh five games into the 2024 season. However, the Jets won only three of the remaining 12 games since, prolonging their playoff drought to 14 seasons.
