Cowboys Set to Hire Brian Schottenheimer as Head Coach

The Dallas Cowboys won’t be looking far to fill their head coaching vacancy. Long-time Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr. tweeted that the Cowboys are looking to sign Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach after Mike McCarthy.

The son of the late coaching great Marty Schottenheimer has been with Dallas since 2022, starting as a coaching analyst and becoming offensive coordinator the following year. In addition to the Cowboys, the younger Schottenheimer has been the OC of the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, and Seattle Seahawks. He helped the Jets and the Seahawks clinch three postseason berths each.

The Cowboys’ head coaching position opened after Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones and McCarthy failed to agree to terms on a contract extension. Hence, McCarthy chose to walk away and has become one of the top coaching candidates this cycle.

Meanwhile, Schottenheimer will take over a team that finished third in the NFC East at 7-10. Likewise, the Cowboys spent only a little over $18 million in the 2024 free-agency period, the lowest in the league. The Cowboys also have one of the weakest running back rotations in the league. However, they do have some weapons on both sides of the ball like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, and Trevon Diggs.
