Multiple sources have confirmed that quarterback Russell Wilson will likely not return to the Pittsburgh Steelers. This update ends the one-time Super Bowl champion’s one-year stint with the AFC North team.
The Steelers signed Wilson for the veteran minimum after the Denver Broncos released him from his massive five-year, $242.5 million contract. Denver paid Wilson $37.5 million last season as part of that deal.
Signing Wilson created a quarterback controversy within the Steelers organization because they also brought in Justin Fields, who had some success before Wilson took over. Ultimately, the Steelers clinched a playoff berth after winning ten games. However, their Wild Card Round game showed the Baltimore Ravens outmatched them.
There were rumors that tensions started brewing between Wilson and Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith over the last six weeks of the regular season. Wilson was barred from changing plays, which could have led to their 2-4 record to close the regular season.

With Wilson not returning, the Steelers will likely have Fields as their starting quarterback. The former Ohio State standout had a 4-2 record before Wilson overtook him on the depth chart after recovering from an injury.
Meanwhile, Wilson could sign with the Las Vegas Raiders, reuniting him with Pete Carroll, his former head coach with the Seattle Seahawks.
