Jose Iglesias, Padres Agree to Contract

FanSided’s Robert Murray reported that veteran infielder Jose Iglesias signed a contract with the San Diego Padres. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman revealed that Iglesias can make $3 million if he makes the roster with a chance to earn $1 million more in incentives.

This deal could be a great bargain if Iglesias sustains his performance from last season. After opening the season in Triple-A, he hit .337/.381/.448 with four home runs in 85 regular season games for the New York Mets. He also played some innings at second base and tied for eighth at the position in defensive runs saved (minimum 400 innings).

Beyond the diamond, Iglesias’s single “OMG” became the anthem for their turnaround. They went 50-34 after its release and made it all the way to the National League Championship Series against the eventual World Series champions Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jose Iglesias returns to the Padres organization two years after appearing in 28 games for their Triple-A affiliate in El Paso, Texas. He can be a valuable addition to San Diego’s infield bench rotation with Tyler Wade, Connor Joe, and Eguy Rosario.
