Max Scherzer won’t start for the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday due to soreness on his right thumb. The team taking the 40-year-old pitcher’s progress, making him miss his scheduled start against the Baltimore Orioles.
Through three Spring Training starts, Scherzer allowed two runs and tallied 14 strikeouts in nine innings. The three-year Cy Young Award winner hasn’t allowed a walk through the preseason. Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million contract with the Blue Jays.
Last season, he went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA for the Texas Rangers. Scherzer had an injury-laden 2024 campaign, which started with a lower back surgery that landed him on the injured list to start the season. Likewise, a banged-up shoulder had him sidelined.
In addition to his Cy Youngs, Scherzer is an eight-time MLB All-Star and a two-time All-MLB First Team member. He has won two World Series titles, one with the Washington Nationals and another with the Rangers. Scherzer also played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Mets.
