Bobby Witt Jr. avoids long absence after being hit on his forearm

Kansas City Royals fans must have held their breaths after Bobby Witt Jr. took a 96-mile-per-hour fastball to his forearm. However, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported, the injury he incurred from Seattle Mariners closer Andres Muñoz’s pitch isn’t serious enough to merit a long absence.

While the Royals shortstop could take some time off from baseball activities to recover, he assured the team’s fans that he was okay, even if he initially lost feeling in his fingers. However, losing him for an extended time could spell trouble for the Royals because he is their best player.

Last season, he became the first shortstop in Major League Baseball history to have two seasons with 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases. In addition to his commendable defense, he won his first batting title while averaging .332/.389/.588. Those numbers earned him a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, and a second-place finish in the American League Most Valuable Player voting behind Aaron Judge.

It’s uncertain if Witt will play during the Royals’ season opener against the Cleveland Guardians on March 27. Therefore, recovering within two weeks could make him ready for Opening Day.
