Jets mulling bad versus worse

Fields to Taylor a lateral move

Aaron Glenn is debating whether to change quarterbacks from Justin Fields to Tyrod Taylor. I guess there are some fantasy implications, but really it doesn't matter a whole lot.

There's a sizable body of work that says Fields just can't play; that he's valuable for his running potential, but his limitations as a passer will ultimately end in him getting yanked. With Taylor, there's more of a history of success passing the ball, but he's struggled with injuries (not that I'm blaming him for a sideline doctor puncturing his lung way back when), and it also makes zero sense for a winless team already playing out the string to be starting a 36-year-old quarterback.

Looking at just the more recent numbers, I pulled Taylor's last five NFL starts (one for the Jets, four for the Giants) and compared them to Fields' five full games as Jets starter this year. I just looked at passing -- we're all aware Fields is a prolific runner.

Not much good to see here. Sorting the game logs by passing yards, Taylor has three of the four best games in that regard. He also has two of the three with multiple touchdown passes. And of course, he has the only two wins. Fields naturally has two of three taking 5-plus sacks, although Taylor hasn't covered himself in glory either (he has three games taking 4-plus).

It might not much matter what Glenn does. (Glenn himself probably won't be employed by the Jets as long as either quarterback.) The fantasy benefit of switching to Taylor now is at least you could be comfortable he might finish a game he starts without being benched. That's not the case at the moment with Fields.

New York is at Cincinnati this week. Fans of streaming defenses, it's fair to consider the Bengals as a better than average option for sacks and takeaways. Survivor Poll fans can consider the Bengals, too.

To your point, they may as well start Brady Cook - who didn't even make the squad, but was eventually designated 3rd string. Nowhere near as ready as Tyrod, but what's the point? They both have big arms. Nobody should need to actually start a Jets QB, so the only issue is which one of these guys can get Wilson the ball when he comes back.

I also noticed Cin for Survivor, but I still have Bills and Colts available, and will probably use one of them.

Yeah, I think I used the Colts the last time they played the Titans. Or maybe at home against Las Vegas, one of those.

I'm the rare Jets fan who's not in favor of starting Cook. I just didn't see any upside out of him in preseason, and he was neither drafted, nor claimed after he didn't make the 53-man roster. I think the least-bad bet is to just play Tyrod, just because he's the closest thing to a competent passer. Not for the future, just to give the other players some semblance of normalcy. Doesn't matter a ton, of course. I doubt any of these three QBs will be on the team next season.

A couple years back, I remember Tyrod Taylor coming in at times for Daniel Jones, with the Giants' passing game getting a spark. I would say put him out there and see if they can win a game.

Yeah, if you play a chaotic disaster at QB, every such game is a waste for the other 10 guys out there. Only thing the young guys learn is bad habits trying to compensate for the uncompensatable.

I like and respect Aaron Glenn, but if you're starting Justin Fields and the offense isn't specifically designed for him to run for 100 yards a game, you're doing it wrong. That's the only upside to starting him. He should be on designed runs more than he's dropping back, in every single game, no exceptions. If you looked at him and saw a pocket passer, I'm sad to say that you deserve to lose your job.

I don't like Aaron Glenn and think he's in over his head. But the Jets problem is so, so obviously a guy called Woody. And that looks unfixable.

And right on on the offensive (mis)design, Bill.

Dave - of course you're right. I was looking at it strictly from a Fantasy perspective, disinterested in what it means to a fan of the team. And really, even from the fantasy perspective, Tyrod is the only answer. I actually thought about starting Fields once in his entire career, and it was this year after all the hype, and he was available. Thank goodness I didn't follow up on that thought!

Let's not free the GM from these roster decisions. As a first-time head coach with a defensive background, I don't think Glenn was building the quarterback room. Woody is a terrible owner, no question, but it's the GM's job to find a quarterback who can credibly pass the ball. It does sound like it will be Taylor going forward, which maybe it should have been from the beginning. (And that is on Glenn, but he's not assembling the roster.)

Mougey also deserves heat for not doing anything to address WR (or EDGE) depth. The only WR he drafted was Arian Smith, who just runs wind sprints. Having Lazard, Reynolds, and Johnson on the same roster is malpractice. One is fine, but three? I liked some of Mougey's moves, but screwing up QB and WR is...not good.

I have sympathy for longtime fans of NFL teams. But the people I'd have a hard time giving a pass to would be front-office folks who prefer to hang on to Breece Hall rather than get whatever they could get for him. Cut the guy loose!

At this point I’m not sure why the Jets want to start winning. Are they going to rattle off 10 straight and crash the playoffs? They need the top quarterback coming out of college. They really should be sellers

Franchise wise, no. Aaron Glenn would presumably like to be a head coach for an entire season or maybe even a second, though, so avoiding the ignominy of 0-17 is probably of interest

Ordinarily, I would expect Taylor to actually start a game before getting hurt, but apparently he’s day-to-day with a knee injury as is.
