Dolphins not that bad?

Miami offense keeps scoring touchdowns

I am hopeful that the Dolphins can cobble together a credible effort tonight – something worth watching. At times, I get lulled into thinking they’re surprisingly decent.

The losses at Indianapolis and Cleveland, of course, are about as low as it gets. Simply dreadful. And I don’t see any scenario where the Dolphins don’t fire Mike McDaniel, then spend the offseason mapping out how to move on from Tua Tagovailoa. They’ll be blowing things up.

At the same time, they keep putting the ball in the end zone. They put up 34 points at Atlanta against a defense ranking No. 1 in pass defense. And prior to the Cleveland debacle, the offense scored 3 TDs in each of their previous four games.

The 49ers, in comparison, have scored 3 TDs in only one game all year.

Miami is one of only six teams (and I wouldn’t make this up) that’s offense has scored at least 3 TDs in five of their last six games. Colts, Lions, Cowboys, Packers, Kansas City – and Miami. (I’ve got those offenses tagged with black dots.)

In the chart below, you’re looking at stats from the last six games for each team. Points, TD passes, TD runs, offensive touchdowns, and percentage of games with at least 3 TDs.

Dolphins a flawed, lesser team, but with some offensive popped. If we get another lesser performance from Ravens defense tonight, it could make for an interesting game.

On the broadcast they mentioned Miami was inside the Baltimore 35 yard line 5 times and they came away with 6 points. Ugly

They were moving the ball fine. A few key plays, or it would have been a competive game. A fumble in their own red zone. A missed FG. A what-was-that play on fourth down. Penalty negates a bomb. The quarterback can't run, which is a big negative in today's game -- doesn't have the ability to convert those key short-yardage plays or to buy time to salvage a few others.

Tua isn't reliable. He's got that combination of head scratching plays and we all don't want to see him get hit, so running is not an option - not good for real football. McDaniel probably will be fired, but to Ian's point, they were moving the ball, just not closing the deal. The defense was giving up some of the easiest looking touchdowns I've seen this season, and I was facing Lamar, so those made my night a disgusting one. I guess firing the coach and starting anew is one way to address it, but getting a better quarterback room and a new defensive coordinator may accomplish the same thing.

They drafted Tua a few picks before Herbert. That's always going to hurt. And Lamar Jackson is a Miami guy; another guy they could have selected. But that's the NFL. As frustrating as fantasy football, but on on a much larger scale.
