With the Raiders coming off a 31-0 clunker, it’s tempting to say that they have nowhere to go but up. But they’re playing at Houston this week, which currently is allowing the fewest points and yards in the league – and tends to play a lot better at home. It could get pretty ugly.
The Raiders finished with 75 net yards offense last week. Only three times in the last 15 years have teams finished with fewer yards. Remarkably, they finished with a similar total in their other 31-0 loss this season (at Kansas City).
That makes the Raiders the only team in the 32-team era to finish with fewer than 100 yards twice in the same season. They’ve also been shut out twice, which is the same amount as the 0-14 expansion Bucs in 1976.
The hope, I suppose, is that the beatdown in Philadelphia will provide a spark of sorts, with the players coming out looking salvage some pride. Of the last 17 teams to finish with less than 100 yards of offense, eight scored at least 23 points in their next game. The Raiders earlier this year followed up their loss at Arrowhead with a 30-29 loss in a shootout against the Jaguars.
But with Houston’s defense has been playing, I’m thinking it looks awfully likely that the Raiders won’t be scoring more than 13 points. A single-digit score looks like a decent possibility.
