The trap of Rams tight ends

Are there any Team Tight End leagues out there? Have I got a choice for you. The Rams last year threw 17 touchdowns to the position, three more than any other team, and more than twice as many as 24 of the league's teams. Actually recommending one player, though, is a whole lot tougher.

The Rams divided that production among four different players a year ago, all of whom are still on the roster, under contract for the upcoming season. All four of those players caught at least 3 touchdowns. There were 50 tight ends who had at least 200 receiving yards last year, and Los Angeles had four of them. But the best of those, Colby Parkinson (pictured), finished with 408 yards. That barely snuck into the top 30 at the position (he was 29th). He averaged just 27 yards per game, saving his fantasy value by catching 8 touchdowns.

Table shows those 50 tight ends with 200-plus yards last year, with Rams players in bold, sorted by yards and showing PPR ranking in the final column.

You might think things would be better this year; that perhaps Parkinson would be featured. But instead, the Rams drafted Ohio State's Max Klare in the second round, their top rookie they hope even steps on the field this year (their other early pick was quarterback Ty Simpson). Plus, Tyler Higbee missed 7 games last year and is 33 years old; maybe they'd let him walk? No, they signed him to a new contract.

The other tight end worth mentioning is the guy they drafted in last year's second round, Terrance Ferguson. He barely played last year, but turned a quarter of his 11 receptions into touchdowns and averaged 21 yards per catch. He'll be playing some, too.

If we're in a dynasty league, I'm intrigued by both Ferguson and Klare. In redraft leagues, it's Parkinson first and maybe Higbee. But a tough position to get excited about, with all the bodies they have playing it.
