Falcons release veterans Freeman, Trufant but add TE Hurst

The Atlanta Falcons released veteran running back DEVONTA FREEMAN and veteran cornerback DESMOND TRUFANT on Monday. Freeman averaged a career-low 3.6 yards per carry last season, while Trufant appears to beMore a salary cap casualty. The Falcons also lost TE AUSTIN HOOPER to the Cleveland Browns, but quickly moved to replace him by adding former Baltimore tight end HAYDEN HURST. Less

Browns land free agent prize in TE Hooper

The Cleveland Browns agreed to a free agent deal with Atlanta Falcons tight end AUSTIN HOOPER on Monday. The deal will make the two-time Pro Bowl tight end the highest paidMore player at his position in the NFL. The Browns can make the deal official when the league year officially opens on Wednesday afternoon. Hooper will join fellow tight end DAVID NJOKU, who only played in four games last year because of a broken wrist and the fact that he fell out of favor with then head coach Freddie Kitchens. Less

Around the NFL: Austin Hooper

The Browns yesterday made Austin Hooper the highest-paid tight end in the game. I'm not going to rip that; that's how free agency works, with timing occasionally enabling guys like Hooper to make more money than Travis Kelce. The question is whether Hooper in Cleveland will have more or less fantasy value than he had in Atlanta.   more »

TE Graham not expected back in Green Bay

The Green Bay Packers are believed to be moving on from veteran tight end JIMMY GRAHAM heading into the 2020 season. Graham’s catches and receiving yards last year were the fewestMore since his rookie season, and his impact in Green Bay has been disappointing. The Packers would save $8 million in salary cap space by releasing Graham. Green Bay is also believed to be interested in free-agent-to-be tight end AUSTIN HOOPER, who is not expected to return to the Atlanta Falcons. Less

Around the NFL: Austin Hooper

When free agency opens in March, Austin Hooper will be the most desirable free agent tight end. (Hunter Henry, apparently, is likely to be franchised by the Chargers.) It's a little surprising the Falcons will let him test the open market (which usually means a player is gone), but they've got cap issues. It's not at all surprising the teams that are already being connected to him.   more »

Falcons to let TE Hooper test free agent market

The Atlanta Falcons are planning to let tight end AUSTIN HOOPER test the free agent market instead of signing him to a long-term contract. Hooper is a 25-year-old, two-time Pro BowlMore tight end coming off the most productive season of his career. He will likely be a hot commodity in free agency, meaning his days with the Falcons are likely over. Less

Freeman to return vs. Saints, Hooper out

Atlanta wide receiver JULIO JONES is a game time decision for tonight’s game against New Orleans, but the picture is much clearer for running back DEVONTA FREEMAN and tight end AUSTINMore HOOPER. Freeman will return and play against the Saints after missing the past two games with a foot sprain. Unfortunately, Hooper will not be joining Freeman against the Saints. He has been ruled out of the game as he continues to deal with an MCL sprain in his knee. Less

Factoid: Tight end matchups

It’s been a good year for playing matchup ball with tight ends. There are a handful of defenses that can’t seem to defend the position, and the points have been flowing.   more »

Atlanta tight end AUSTIN HOOPER is hoping to build on a Pro Bowl year in 2018 as he heads into the upcoming 2019 season. Hooper had career-highs in receptions, yards, andMore touchdowns last year and he plans to work out with quarterback MATT RYAN throughout OTAs to continue to build the relationship with his signal-caller. I heard Matt Ryan saying the Falcons need to use Austin Hooper more. Sounds good to me. When they throw to him, good things tend to happen.  more »
