Around the NFL: Check-in on the rookie receivers

It’s been a quiet beginning for the heralded rookie wide receivers. Of the three selected in the top 10, none have actually gotten on a field yet in a preseason game. The second-rounders haven’t been much better. But some of the later-round choices look pretty good.  more »

The Cincinnati Bengals are experimenting with rookie wide receiver JOHN ROSS as a punt returner. While he still has much to learn, the team is hoping that his speed and fearlessness can give them an edge. The Bengals last returned a punt for a touchdown in 2012.

Fantasy News: Fantasy Index Experts Poll

I’m working on compiling the Experts Poll stuff right now. You take the top 20 picks of the various panelists, average them, and see what it looks like. With the wide receivers, I’m surprised that there’s no interest in the rookies.  more »

Factoid: Wide receivers in top 10 picks

Factoid: First-round receivers

Three wide receivers go in the top 10. That was a surprise, I think. It doesn’t happen often. And as I look at previous drafts, I’m confident that at least one of those picks will flame out.  more »

Factoid: First wide receiver drafted

Corey Davis of Western Michigan and Mike Williams of Clemson -- those are the favorites to be the top wide receivers selected in April's draft. Just maybe John Ross, after his blazing 40 at the combine. Who will go first? It might not matter, at least in terms of which one goes on to have the better NFL career.   more »

Factoid: Rookie receivers

Yesterday I took a brief look at the tendency of heralded rookie wide receivers to fall short of expectations. Despite expectations and hopes, a good chunk of the rookie receivers putting up big numbers are players who weren’t as coveted coming out of the draft.   more »

Factoid: Rookie receivers

With wide receivers, there’s a tendency to fall in love with players who are selected in the top 10 or who seem to be the consensus best rookie available. I’m as guilty as the next guy. I remember being high on Tavon Austin and Justin Blackmon. I was high on Corey Coleman (who might still be very good but had a so-so rookie year).  more »
