Around the NFL: Jonathan Stewart on last legs?

Saquon Barkley is a first-round pick in fantasy drafts, and it wouldn't be terribly surprising if he doesn't come off the field very often this season. The Giants gave Jonathan Stewart a two-year, $6.9 million contract in March, with $3 million guaranteed, but that looked bad at the time and even worse now.   more »

Around the NFL: C.J. Anderson

The Panthers signed C.J. Anderson yesterday, a marriage that looked like a good fit ever since the Broncos released him. Carolina lost Jonathan Stewart and didn't add anyone in the draft, while Anderson is a capable back who was released by Denver for reasons that aren't entirely apparent; the team wanted to go with younger options with more upside, perhaps.   more »

When you talk about a team and a player being a good fit for each other, it's usually intended as a compliment. Usually. But then there's the Giants signing Jonathan Stewart and the Lions reportedly close to signing Frank Gore. Both fits look "good," but for the wrong reasons.   more »

Panthers release Jonathan Stewart

The Carolina Panthers have cut veteran running back JONATHAN STEWART after 10 seasons. Stewart, who will be 31 this month, had a year remaining on his contract but became a salaryMore cap casualty. The team still has second-year, pass-catching back CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY on the roster but he is not the power-runner that Stewart was. Less

Around the NFL: Norv Turner in Carolina

Carolina is bringing in Norv Turner to run the offense. How might that affect the role of Christian McCaffrey? McCaffrey caught 80 passes as a rookie, with fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula using him in a variety of ways – lining him up all over the place.   more »

Stewart, McCaffrey to share Carolina backfield

Carolina rookie running back CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY has received tons of praise during the first week of training camp but head coach RON RIVERA insists that he will be one half ofMore a tandem in the Panthers backfield. McCaffrey will share with veteran teammate JONATHAN STEWART, with Stewart expected to be the power back handling first and second down. Stewart to remain lead back in Carolina

Carolina head coach Ron Rivera continues to insist that workhorse running back JONATHAN STEWART’s role will not change in the Panthers backfield. The team drafted dynamic running back CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY in the first round but it’s the punishing 240-pound Stewart who should continue to see the bulk of the carries.
