Factoid for April 2, 2013

Jack Pardee passed yesterday at 76. In addition to being a player, he was the head coach at Chicago, Washington and Houston (Oilers, not Texans).

Pardell was the Coach of the Year in 1979, even though Washington didn't make the playoffs that year (that team went 10-6).

Since that time, only one other coach, Lindy Infante in 1989 with the Packers, has won the Coach of the Year while not making the playoffs. Infante helped elevate the Packers to 10-6 from 4-12 in 1988.

But when Pardee pulled it off, it was happening for the third time in four years.

1976: Forrest Gregg (Browns went from 3-11 to 9-5).

1978: Jack Patera (Seahawks go from 2-12 to 5-9 to 9-7 in their first three seasons).

1979: Jack Pardee (Washington much better than expected -- 10-6 and missed playoffs when it lost 35-34 at Dallas on the final day of the season).
