Red-hot Russell Wilson

Highest-rated quarterback in the second half of the season

It's hard to believe how good Russell Wilson was in his rookie season. He compiled a passer rating of 120 in his final eight games. That was the best in entire league -- and two of the other quarterbacks in the top 5 were also youngsters.

What ever happened to the idea that you had to be an experienced veteran to thrive at quarterback? That's been changing in recent years, with more rookies playing reasonably well right away.

Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco did it in 2008. Andy Dalton and Cam Newton did it in 2011. And Russell Wilson, Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck all had a lot of success last year.

Wilson led the way, putting up better numbers in the second half of the season than even guys like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers.

Are you serious?

Griffin and Colin Kaepernick were also awfully good in the final eight games of last year. Kaepernick, of course, wasn't a rookie, but he was in his first season (half season) as a starter.

Giddyap, young bloods.

The following chart shows all quarterbacks who had at least 100 pass attempts in their teams' final eight games.

I'm glad to see an article about Wilson because I was about to ask a question about him in the Mailbag. I don't understand what all the excitement is about him regarding Fantasy. Yes he's a great game manager, and Seattle should be thrilled, but I don't know of any leagues rewarding QB rating. A lot of it could have to do with my league's scoring system, giving a 10 point bonus for 250 yds,and a point for every 10 yds. thereafter. When I add 30 yd to each of his games last year(your projection),he still only reaches 250 a grand total of 6 times. Weeden got that much 5 times last year and now has Turner as a coach. Palmer in Arizona passed for 4000 yds and now has Fitzgerald. I agree that Wilson is an NFL star, but I'm trying to understand why he has so much fantasy hype?

He was a good fantasy option in the second half of last season. 16 TDs in eight games. And he was a productive runner as well. I think he averaged 45 rushing yards per game in those games, which is like an additional 90 passing yards in most formats. He also scored 4 TD runs in those games. Fantasy-wise, I'm not a big Wilson fan. I have him lower than most (because I don't believe he'll run as much). But to suggest anybody should even consider Weeden or Palmer before him, that's ridiculous.

Perhaps the Weeden comparison was a reach. I was pretty much saying in our scoring system Weeden got the bonus points 5 times compared to 3 for Wilson. Also I see Weeden on the way up and Wilson on the way down scoring wise. But more importantly I looked at the numbers from last year, and in my scoring system Wilson scored a total of 327,Palmer 314,Weeden 172

The quarterback depth has never been better with the success of Wilson, Luck, Griffin and Kaepernick. I'm seriously considering waiting as long as I can to draft a quarterback. If I have the #1, #2, #11 or #12 spot in our serpentine draft, I might go back to back quarterbacks grabbing 2 of the 4 just mentioned and playing matchups all year. Which 2 of the 4 seem to matchup the best in terms of their opponents week to week?

All four of those guys, I think, aren't "matchup" quarterbacks. They're guys you can draft and plug in for the majority of your starts. Pair one of those guys with a Freeman or Bradford as a backup, and you should be fine.

I think what James was trying to say is that sometimes mediocre qbs with bad deffences sometimes make for better fantasy starters cause they have to thow to catch up. This year Kapernick an Wilson might be handicapped by their elite deffences. I see many games where their running backs will be running pu the clock the entire fourth quarter. How do you account for this Ian?
