A look at how teams draft

Most mock drafts (not all, but most) are greatly influenced by what the writer thinks. That person is matching up commonly perceived best players available with commonly perceived team needs. That's why you typically see the Browns selecting an early quarterback and the Raiders selecting an early wide receiver.

Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal has an interesting column, not a mock draft but a guess as to what teams will do the next few days based on what they've done in recent years. The Ravens like small-school stars, the Bills like Combine performers, the Bears like tall players, etc.

Like every mock, these are just guesses, of course. Clark's views may not pan out, and the Browns, for example, may end up taking Johnny Manziel after all (as so many mocks are predicting).

But it will be interesting to see how accurate his guesses are. Will the Patriots select Alabama or Rutgers players? Will the Jaguars go heavy on defense? Will the 49ers take a tall wide receiver?

Tomorrow night, we'll start to get the answers.
