Fanex Analysis Draft

Hoping to keep Sam Bradford healthy

Great wide receivers. Potential fatal flaw at quarterback. That’s where I’m at right now in this Fanex Analysis Draft.

These last five or so rounds have been interesting in that there have still been some real nice players on the board, but there have been wildly different opinions on guys. I’m seeing some guys picked now where they’re not really even on my draft board, while there’s still some coveted guys out there.

At picks 11.03 and 12.10, I went with depth wide receivers. Brandin Cooks and Markus Wheaton. Both of these guys could be really nice pass catchers. Cooks could be the Sproles-type outlet receiver for the Saints, and the Steelers are looking for big things from Wheaton. Both might catch 70-plus passes. They played together, by the way, in college. I would have to get out the old league records, but maybe the first time Oregon State have been selected by the same team in consecutive rounds. I will have to have the research team look into Steven Jackson, Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Wheaton didn’t do anything, of course, as a rookie in Pittsburgh, but that’s kind of how they bring their receivers along. Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, Antonio Brown and Nate Washington didn’t do much of anything in their first years either. Jerricho Cotchery and Emmanuel Sanders are gone, and Wheaton is the guy they want to emerge. If I hadn’t taken Cooks at 11.03, Wheaton would have been the pick.

Those two youngsters combine with Randall Cobb, Julian Edelman, Roddy White and Larry Fitzgerald, and I expect to outscore everyone at the wide receiver position. It’s a PPR league, and you start three, with potentially four including the Flex.

In this kind of a league (no roster moves) I like to carry two good quarterbacks. I’ve won this kind of league multiple times in the past because of that second quality quarterback. In this one, I’ve got Tom Brady as my No. 1. He’s in the second-tier of quarterbacks behind the Big 3. I think he’s fine, but relative to the No. 1 quarterbacks on the other 11 teams in this league, I think he’s only average.

I wanted to bolster this position by adding a second quality starter, but I never got around to it. I was watching a couple of guys, but they went earlier than I expected. Andy Dalton in particular, is a guy who tends to get dissed in these drafts. Plus I kept selecting RB and WR that I thought were nice deals.

Anyway, at pick 13.03, we’re at the point where I have to select a quarterback. There are two other teams sitting with one quarterback, and some teams might go for three. So I’ve got take Sam Bradford, EJ Manuel, Jake Locker, Johnny Manziel, Josh McCown or Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I went with Bradford. Don’t love him. Don’t like his durability. But I think he’s the best of these guys. Mostly I just need him to stay in the lineup for 16 games.

This is an ongoing draft. If you want to read the analysis of the other selectors, it’s available on the Fanex Analysis League website.
