Jaguars-Bears

Interesting Jaguars-Bears game last night. Strong performances from some rookies, more ammunition for possible controversies and depth charts, and other developments. In no particular order:

Toby Gerhart got his first carries for the Jaguars after sitting out the opener (hip flexor injury). Looked healthy if not explosive (6 carries for 19 yards).

Jordan Todman, the expected backup, didn't look good (8 carries for 18 yards). Can Denard Robinson steal that job? At 6 for 34, he looked much better, albeit against reserves. Todman caught 3 passes for 24 yards.

Chad Henne looked fine running the offense, but Blake Bortles -- again, working against reserves -- was particularly impressive. Understandable why he was drafted almost a round earlier than the other quarterbacks. The Jaguars keep saying he'll sit all year, but it's a lot more likely he gets in the lineup sooner rather than later if he can run the offense that efficiently.

Allen Robinson has been hurt, so it's Marqise Lee making the early impact of the two second-round rookies, catching 4 passes and a touchdown. Once again, though, undrafted Allen Hurns caught our eye, leading the team with 4 catches for 74 yards. He's not doing it against backups, either -- he started the game.

For the Bears, not much to say about Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery. They're great.

Your Matt Forte handcuff, for now, is Shaun Draughn. He got all the second-team work and looked good doing it, better certainly than rookie KaDeem Carey against deeper reserves. Things can still change, but it looks like Draughn will win that job.

Jimmy Clausen wasn't as effective as in the first exhibition, due partly to some headset issues. But it will be a surprise if he gets beat out for the backup job by Jordan Palmer.

With Martellus Bennett on a team suspension, former Jaguar tight end Zach Miller lit it up in the first exhibition. But Miller has never been able to stay healthy and left last night's game with a foot injury. Bennett is back, too.
