A football watching lowlight for me yesterday: Peyton Manning was picked off with the Broncos losing 17-12 and just over 2 minutes left, and I thought the game was over and left the room. Put out the recycling, whatever. It was only much later, watching highlights, that I discovered the Broncos had got the ball back down 8 points, then drove the field and scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion to force overtime.
And I call myself a football fan. Watching the highlights unfold, I was kind of incredulous, like watching a movie you've already seen but having it end differently this time. I had to rewind, not once but twice, to make sure I was actually watching highlights of the right game. Embarrassing! And a reminder that it really is never over until it's over. A mistake I won't make again. This season.
Chargers at Bills: After knocking off Seattle and then not letting down while going on the road to face the Bills, it's clear the Chargers are pretty good. Another big game from Philip Rivers; I need to consider starting him over Tom Brady, it seems. ... Donald Brown had a disappointing stat line, but we can't complain about the workload. With Mathews and Woodhead both injured, he should continue to get chances. Brown did have a nice, hard-nosed touchdown run erased by a penalty. ... Big game for Fred Jackson. The Buffalo committee remains a frustrating one. Hard to start either running back with much confidence that he'll be the guy this week. ... Kind of a breakout for Ladarius Green, although I saw him turn the wrong way on a catchable touchdown chance.
Bengals at Titans: Will continue to beat the drum for the Bengals. Really good team. Just dismantled the Titans, and their offense is strong enough to have a lot of good fantasy options. Cool trick play with Mohamed Sanu throwing a TD to Andy Dalton. With that included, I should have left Sanu in my DraftKings lineup. ... Bishop Sankey sighting. Shonn Green scored a touchdown, but Sankey had almost twice as many yards on the same number of carries (61 to 33). I think the Titans are a lesser team that's not going to win a lot, so eventually they'll just start developing Sankey.
Ravens at Browns: Pretty good game. Watching Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell run, I can't help but wonder if Ben Tate is actually going to start when the Browns come out of their Week 4 bye. Probably, but his days as a feature back in Cleveland seem short if they're not already over. ... Productive game for Brian Hoyer, though he lost and missed out on a game-clinching touchdown when he ran 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage before throwing a disallowed touchdown. Browns then had a field goal blocked. In the final minutes, he was a little off on a pass that would have enabled them to run out the clock. Tough to be a Browns fan. ... Steve Smith making plays all over the place. In PPR the guy is almost an every-week start. Dennis Pitta hurt, so time to add Owen Daniels and look for even more targets for the wideouts. Yes, I would add Lorenzo Taliaferro. I am not surprised that he already looks better than Bernard Pierce. Traded Pierce away in dynasty in March. Ravens can't really keep him starting for long.
Packers at Lions: Didn't see this one coming. In one league I've got Lacy and Cobb, and those guys are simply killing me. I know Lacy has had some tough matchups, but that was a soft fumble he lost today. Just brutal. Not sure what to make of Aaron Rodgers struggling. He was off-target on some throws, including one to Jordy Nelson in the end zone. If the Packers can only score 7 points at Detroit, it's a little worrying.
Colts at Jaguars: Well, no one will accuse Pep Hamilton of being too conservative this week. Andrew Luck threw a touchdown to Hakeem Nicks midway through the fourth quarter with the Colts ahead 30-3. Am wishing I'd drafted Luck in more leagues; the majority of his incompletions yesterday were drops. Clearly the only thing holding him back is Hamilton. It's not Indy's nonexistent ground game or the Colts defense. I wonder if the Colts will be able to trade Richardson before the deadline? ... Jags making a switch to Blake Bortles. Ugly pick 6 at the end of the game, but really, could he be less effective than Chad Henne? Maybe the switch from Toby Gerhart to Denard Robinson won't be far behind. Time to go all in on the future, right? ... Touchdown for Coby Fleener, but he also dropped an easy one (and bobbled the one he caught). Indy is throwing to 3 different TEs.
Raiders at Patriots: Don't know what to say about the Patriots offense. It's just not clicking. Is Tom Brady too old? Are there too many moving parts and not enough guys really stepping up? Rob Gronkowski dropped a catchable touchdown and Danny Amendola dropped another at the goal line on the next play (tough grab, but...), so he's not getting enough help. Ten catches for Julian Edelman, so he's at least delivering. But Brady is killing my lineups. Things should pick up, but I've been saying that for two weeks and not feeling as good about it right now. Definitely should have passed on Brady for Luck for in a couple of leagues, I'll say that much. ... Not much fantasy value in the Raiders. Darren McFadden had a late, game-tying touchdown run wiped out by a penalty.
Vikings at Saints: Is Drew Brees too old? Kind of a disappointing game for him given the setting matchup. OK, close to 300 yards and 2 TDs, I don't mean to be greedy. But you know. That's a chance for him to go for 350 and 4 or something. I'm going to say he misses Mark Ingram, because Khiry Robinson, not as effective. Nice game for Brandin Cooks, at least, and a touchdown if you started Colston, too. ... The Teddy Bridgewater era begins. Maybe next week it will be the Jerick McKinnon era, too. After the last couple of weeks, the quarterback switch seems good for Cordarrelle Patterson.
Texans at Giants: I thought last week that the Giants might be on the verge of a little win streak. The upcoming schedule is mostly favorable. Not surprising they won this one. They tried hard to screw up early on, botching a snap on a field goal and fumbling near the goal line (Larry Donnell), but they've got some good players and can play some defense, especially against the run. Force the Texans to pass and the whole system breaks down. Because they can't win with Ryan Fitzpatrick leading the way. Nice game for DeAndre Hopkins, anyway. Andre Johnson would have caught a touchdown if Fitzpatrick had given him an accurate throw near the goal line. Alfred Blue did OK in for Arian Foster, though presumably Foster will be back next week. Huge game (and workload) for Rashad Jennings.
Washington at Eagles: Slugfest. Big numbers for both passing games and pretty much every wideout. Maybe I underestimated Kirk Cousins. Maybe the Eagles banged-up offensive line is going to continue to be an issue for the ground game and LeSean McCoy. Bottom line is that the Eagles' track-meet types of games produce plenty of yards and points for both sides. Six TD passes in this game. Plus 750 passing/receiving yards. Why can't it keep happening? Eagles haven't even played Dallas yet. Breakout game for Jordan Matthews, I think it could keep coming. Clearly better than Riley Cooper.
Cowboys at Rams: My sleeper pick of Jared Cook worked out fine, the Cowboys seemed to have no idea how to cover either him or Lance Kendricks. Something to keep in mind going forward (Cowboys also lit up by Vernon Davis and Antonio Gates). Cook dropped an easy touchdown or it would be 7 TDs in three games by tight ends against Dallas. And then blew up at his quarterback on the sidelines. Dude, you dropped the thing, you should be apologizing. ... Big games for Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray, serviceable games from Zac Stacy. Austin Davis, I think, should keep that quarterback job; no reason to think Shaun Hill would be better. Davis not the next big thing at QB but generally played well, albeit with 2 costly picks. What, is he supposed to catch the ball for Cook, too?
49ers at Cardinals: Really underestimated the Cardinals here. Their defense has been gutted by free agency, injury and suspension, but it's still pretty damn good. Got some good young talent and coaching, too. They're 3-0 and it doesn't feel like a fluke; they won 10 games last year, after all. Kind of a frustrating time for us Andre Ellington owners (especially those of us who blew a chunk of our waiver money on Jonathan Dwyer). Difference-making player but just a step or two from breaking huge plays in every game, it seems. And he hasn't scored yet. ... Stevie Johnson the main beneficiary from the Vernon Davis injury, it seems.
Kansas City at Dolphins: Tough to figure the Dolphins, who out-tough the Patriots but then get beaten convincingly by Buffalo and Kansas City the last two weeks. Am guessing the head coach will take the fall eventually, which perhaps he should have a year ago. ... Nice game for Knile Davis. I'm not rushing out to pick up Joe McKnight, but he was impressive in a secondary role too. And a quiet 100 yards for Lamar Miller
Broncos at Seahawks: What can I tell you. Thought the game was over. Glad I was wrong and that Russell Wilson got me a bunch more points in a couple of leagues, but still sorry I missed it as it happened. Manning finished with 300 yards and 2 TDs, but if you watched the game you know he didn't do anything until very late. And I might not find it any easier to trade away Montee Ball in my dynasty league this week.
Steelers at Panthers: Kind of surprising. Carolina's defense wasn't as bad as the final suggests (it was 9-3 at halftime) but it definitely wore down. And their offensive line is a real problem. LeVeon Bell and Kelvin Benjamin were the big stories for me in this game. Benjamin is a legit No. 1, probably a 1,000-yard receiver this year. I need to stop leaving him on the bench. Bell just looks great out there.
Monday, Monday: I think every one of my matchups this week is hinging on Chris Johnson. In a couple of leagues I'm starting him, in a couple I'm facing him. The way my season has gone so far he'll score just enough to beat me in two leagues while not scoring enough for me to win the two others. Anyway, I do like Johnson in this game, and the Bears passing game. I've gone back and forth on this one but I tend to think the Bears will escape with something like a 24-21 win. Should be a good one. Go (or not?) CJ!
