Blair Walsh helps to bring kicker crown to Minnesota

Blair Walsh missed a short field goal, tearing out the hearts of plenty of Vikings fans on Sunday. But he also had a really good regular season, lifting Minneapolis-based Matt Weight to first place in the kickers category of the Fantasy Index Open.

The Fantasy Index Open is the sister competition to the Experts Poll proper in the magazine. Anybody and everybody (it’s an “open”) sends in their top 20 at each position. We grade them all, and the winner can stake a claim to being the overall king of all the fantasy land.

In this style of contest, every pick at every position is graded. The higher you rank a player, the most he counts towards your score.

And Weight, who’s based in the Vikings’ hometown, came out on top.

His two key picks were Walsh, whom he ranked higher than the vast majority of the field, and Cody Parkey, who didn’t even play. Parkey was one of the top-10 kicker on most entries, but Weight had the foresight to move him down to 17th on his board, creating relative value.

Weight also benefitted by being one of the few to move Adam Vinatieri out of his top 5. That helped him edge to the top in this category.

Another entry based in the NFC North, Steve Hoyt of Illinois, finished in second. Eric Goetz, who lives just outside Seattle, was third.

There’s no reward, alas, for winning individual categories in this competition. The overall winner, however, wins a gigantic trophy from the team at Affordable Trophies. They’ve been partnering with us in this competition for the last four years.

There are 194 entries this time. The top 2 also win invitations to compete alongside 18 industry analysts in the Experts Poll in the 2015 edition of Fantasy Football Index magazine.

With two of the six categories scored, Goetz and Weight are the two current overall leaders. Two others have nudged over 69,000 total points. But there are still four categories left to score.

A little feedback from a long time customer.

Our fantasy pool is entering its 25^th year and I have used multiple books and on-line tools over the years.

I have locked on to Fantasy Index as my go to for the last 5 years and have won the pool 3 of those years and finished no lower than 4^th.

Interesting to see how much more accurate you were at the end of the year compared to other books my competitors used.

I wanted to thank you for such an amazing product and your customer service. I ordered the wrong date for my update and called to correct the mistake. Your customer service person was very kind, helpful and took care of the issue immediately.

I have used your product for the past 18 years or so… Every now and then I will be tempted and look at what other magazines have to offer, quickly realizing no one comes close.

In addition to the magazine, I started buying the weekly updates years ago when my dad taught me a lesson. The draft came and dad was sitting in the 12 hole for his pick. He told me he felt very comfortable about who he was going to select but would not tell me who his prized gem was to be. I was doubtful. The pick? Priest Holmes (his first dynamite year). I remember telling my dad, "that is a decent pick but they plan to pull him at the goal line." Ever the teacher, dad explained he had purchased the Fantasy Football Index update and read Holmes would get the goal line carries. "Update?", I asked. That was 2002 and Holmes had 21 rushing TDs and Dad won the title! Lesson learned.

By the way, I have made the title game for the last 5 years in a row. Thanks for the detailed, hard work and an great product!
