Back on Tuesday, I pointed out that Golden Tate in the 2015-2017 seasons was one of the league’s best wide receivers inside the 10. He caught 17 of 21 pass attempts in that part of the field in those seasons. But let me dip back into that for a moment.

Now that the Weekly is out the door, and I’ve had a chance to work through the 2018 numbers, I see that Tate has been about the worst receiver in that part of the field this year, catching only 1 of 5 passes. Among players with at least 5 attempts, only two have a lower catch rate (Kyle Rudolph and Odell Beckham have both caught 1 of 6).

These are home-cooked stats. We count them up ourselves (they are no league-supplied numbers). Most notably, they included 2-point conversions, which technically aren’t official plays.

While I’ve got the file open, I will pass along a few other observations.

Tom Brady has attempted 20 passes inside the 10, and Rob Gronkowski has been the intended target on only one of those passes (an incompletion). James White has instead seen a team-high 6 targets, with 4 TDs.

Julio Jones hasn’t caught any passes in that part of the field – 0-2. Instead, Austin Hooper leads them with 4 scores on 5 passes.

Baltimore has attempted 10 passes to tight ends inside the 10, but they’ve gone to four different tight ends. Maxx Williams and Mark Andrews have caught all 5 passes thrown their way, while they’ve gone only 1 of 5 throwing to Nick Boyle and Hayden Hurst. Williams was a healthy scratch last week (so presumably some of the other tight ends will be used more in the remaining games).

Bears have gone 0-3 passing for Allen Robinson, but 13 of 20 when going to other players.

Jeff Heuerman isn’t a big part of Denver’s passing game, but he’s got a team-high 8 targets in that part of the field (more than Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas combined) bit has caught only 2 of them. He had a short touchdown nullified for a push-off late in the Arizona game.

Jimmy Graham was supposed to be a red-zone monster. That was the theory. As we hit the halfway point of the season, he’s caught 1 of 3 passes inside the 10.

T.Y. Hilton typically hasn’t been used much around the goal-line, but he’s seen a team-high 9 targets this year, despite missing two games. He’s caught 4 of them.

For the high-powered Rams, Cooper Kupp has as many targets inside the 10 as Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods combined, and that’s despite missing two and half games.

Among players with at least 5 targets, only two have caught more than 80 percent of the balls thrown their way, and they both play for the Saints: Michael Thomas, Alvin Kamara.

Chris Godwin could benefit from Tampa Bay’s decision to switch quarterbacks. When Ryan Fitzpatrick has been at quarterback, he’s gone to Godwin on 7 of his 12 pass attempts in that part of the field (resulting in 4 touchdowns). Famous Jameis has attempted 8 passes down there, and only 2 have gone to Godwin (with 1 catch/TD).

With the Raiders (who are playing tonight), Jared Cook has been their best and busiest player in that part of the field. He’s seen 9 targets, and he’s caught 7 of them. So he’s very much a candidate for top-5 tight end numbers this week, I think. I’ll be using him in my lineup in the Fantasy Index Blackout. Amari Cooper, on the other hand, sitting at just 1 of 3. That’s been an issue since the Raiders drafted him. In three and half years with them, he caught 6 of 21 pass attempts in that part of the field (with 4 TDs and a pair of 2-point conversions). Good luck, Dallas.
