What exactly are we getting into with Nick Foles? He had the hot streak with Philadelphia back in 2017. Is he the guy to direct Chicago into the playoffs?
He came off the bench and threw 3 TDs in a half against Atlanta. And when he’s been starting in recent years, he’s been pretty effective.
Consider the chart below. It shows all games Foles has started since 2015. (Backup appearances aren’t listed, so no Falcons game). Three of the games I’ve tagged with black dots. In 2017, they pulled him early from a Week 17 game at Dallas – saving him for the playoffs. And twice last year he didn’t play all that much – injured early against Kansas City, and benched during a loss against Tampa Bay.
If we look at Foles’ last 16 other starts (a full season worth of work), he’s averaged 260 passing yards per game, with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. And he’s gone 11-5 in those games. And just 22 sacks in those games (he does a good job of getting the ball out of his hands).
Foles was not as effective in 2015, but that was a pretty limited Rams offense.
I’m kind of intrigued to see what Foles might do in that offense. They’ve got some decent weapons, and Matt Nagy runs a pass-oriented scheme. The Bears after three weeks have scored all 10 of their touchdowns on passes (oddly, they’re on pace to finish the season with 53 touchdown passes).
