Question

Monte Kiffin on Sunday will be inducted into Tampa Bay’s Ring of Honor. He was a highly regarded defensive coordinator for 23 seasons with the Bucs, including one Super Bowl season. Who is the only other man who’s been so honored by a team primarily for his work as a coordinator? This player won an NFL championship as a player, but with a different franchise. With the team that chose to honor him, he helped them win three Super Bowls.

Answer

Richie Petitbon, Washington. He played two seasons with Washington and was a head coach for one year, but Petitbon is in the team’s Ring of Honor for his work as a defensive coordinator from 1981 to 1992, which included Super Bowl wins over Miami, Denver and Buffalo. Petitbon was an All-Pro safety with the Bears team that won the NFL title in 1963.
