Jamison Crowder won’t play for the Jets today, and that makes Braxton Berrios look like a sneaky decent fill-in option – at least in PPR formats.
Berrios doesn’t get downfield for many impact catches, but he can work out of the slot, catching short balls in the middle of the field. The Patriots drafted him a few years back with the idea of turning him into Julian Edelman’s eventual replacement, and Berrios has been working his way to becoming that kind of player.
Berrios played well enough last year that I was surprised they even brought Crowder back. It would seem that with Berrios, that slot spot is adequately filled, and they added a pair of other notable receivers in the offseason (signing Corey Davis and drafting Elijah Moore).
At least for now, the Jets seem to still consider Crowder to be their main slot receiver, but every time he’s out, Berrios seems to do just fine filling in. After two weeks, he’s leading the Jets in catches and receiving yards.
In the last two years, Berrios has gotten on the field for at least half of the team’s plays six times, and he’s caught 34 passes for 316 yards and 2 TDs – about 6 catches for 53 yards per week.
