Darrel Williams

Arizona signs veteran running back

I have a new favorite last-round pick. Darrel Williams. I think he’s going to win the backup tailback job in Arizona, and he’ll be pretty productive when he’s in there.

Williams recently signed a one-year deal at the minimum. He also kind of got kicked the curb by Kansas City late last year. When they got rolling in the playoffs last year, it was with Jerick McKinnon as their main back. They kind of cooled on Williams at that time.

Williams is also really slow, contributing to him not even being drafted when he was coming out of LSU. I can’t say for sure, but if we were to take all of the running backs who ran for at least 400 yards last year out to a track, I would guess Williams would be the slowest of those guys.

These are not selling points.

But I think Williams can play some. He had his moments with KC. When Clyde Edwards-Helaire got hurt in 2020, Williams filled in nicely in the playoff wins over Cleveland and Buffalo, helping to lift them to the Super Bowl.

Williams played on a lot of third downs last year. He can catch, and I think his size makes him better in pass protection. They also used him some in short-yardage. On both fronts, bigger and better than CEH.

There were seven games last year where KC moved Williams up into the starting role, and he put up top-10 numbers in those games (using PPR scoring), averaging 50 rushing and 39 receiving yards, with 5 TDs.

Now he’s coming into Arizona, and I think he’ll be the backup running back. He’s got a lot more experience than their sixth-round pick, Keaontay Ingram. And he’s a lot bigger than holdovers Eno Benjamin and Jonathan Ward. He should be the guy, and James Conner has never played an NFL season without missing at least two games.

Williams should get some starts, I figure, and he’ll be a top-10 kind of back when he’s in there (given the nature of the offense).

I like stashing backup running backs, and Williams looks like one of those stash guys.

How high do you think Javonte Williams will be on boards. I have him top 5 with his situation.

One of the reasons I’m an annual powerhouse is that I’m a cheater (thanks FFI) Another reason is I’m instinctively good at strategy. In the one league that I’m in that’s a draft, having a guy like this in your back pocket for the last round allows you to choose a defense and a kicker a round earlier, therefore getting better players at those positions.

In regards to Javonte, we do an experts poll in the magazine. 20 guys. Only four of them put him in the top 10 at running back. I see a 7th, and 8th and two 10th-place votes. So if you got him in your top 5, I expect you'll be picking him in most of your leagues.

Great article Ian. I won a dynasty championship last year with Darrell Williams ending up as my top back. Akers, Hunt, Drake, Gaskin, all bombed. Helped that I had Brady and Lamar and 9 top IDP players. But Williams was key and I grab him for PPR league. Ian who are your other backup RBs you likely will stash!

#5 with Gordon back? I don't see it unless Gordon gets injured early on.

I like handcuff guys like Cook, Hunt and Pollard better than Williams this year.Cook could be really good in Buffalo and we all know what Hunt can do.

Ian isn't saying he likes Williams better than those guys. But Cook, Hunt and Pollard are going to be drafted a lot earlier (6th, 8th, and 9th rounds in the Experts Draft a week ago). That's an area where you're passing up on really good starters at other positions for that No. 2 running back.

I understand that but our League only allows 4 total RBs per team ,start two so thoughs guys on my list will most likely be available.

If we're talking 12 teams each drafting 4 running backs, that's 48. Darrel Williams wouldn't make that cut. (Maybe after it's certain he's going to be that No. 2 guy in Arizona he might make sense as the 4th back for the franchise that selected Conner). But if only 48 running backs are being chosen, pretty much every team will walk away with four running backs who were in their top 40, given the variation in draft boards.
