The Thursday night game had me wondering how great Mark Andrews is? When they plugged rookie Isaiah Likely into that role, after all, he looked very Andrews like, catching 6 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Either the Ravens have two really good tight ends (possible, I suppose) or part of the greatness comes in how they’re used.
Lamar Jackson, I think, likes to throw to tight ends. That helps to magnify Andrews’ stats and value. But as far as an actual talent, I’m thinking their might be another dozen tight ends who could be plugged into that role in Baltimore’s offense and put up comparable numbers.
If the Ravens were to trade Andrews to Atlanta for Kyle Pitts, I would be a lot more interested in Pitts than Andrews. And if we were to trade out Andrews for Cole Kmet or Mike Gesicki, I think I would like those players more as well. (I’m not sure that Kmet is up there with Andrews, but I would think Andrews wouldn’t be much of a factor playing for the Bears.)
But Andrews is good, and he’s not leaving Baltimore anytime soon. If I were walking into a dynasty draft today, Andrews would be the first tight end I would select. He’s got the right combination of age and talent.
Travis Kelce might be better than Andrews right now, but he’s 6 years older. If the question is 2024 Kelce or 2024 Mark Andrews, that’s not even a conversation.
Kyle Pitts is only 22 and is remarkably talented, but with him there’s the very annoying here-and-now problem that he’s been in the league for a year and half and the Falcons haven’t made much of on effort yet to get him the ball.
I turn my attention to dynasty leagues every Saturday, rotating between the four meaningful positions. Rankings assume a 12-team league using PPR scoring, with teams (most probably carrying three tight ends) holding the rights to players indefinitely. Rookies tagged with black dots.
Last week: Running backs.
Next week: Wide receivers.
